What does the title “Boys of Blood and Bone” tell us? Discuss themes and characters?

‘Boys of Blood and Bone’ is a book written by two different views on how two different characters lived and fulfilled their life. The book shows the difference of the two characters by how they lived their life in their own time.

The title ‘boys of blood and bone’ is a reflection of the characters, Andy Lansell and Henry Lyon. The difference between the two characters is that they lived in different eras and had different fights to battle.

Andy Lansell fought in the First World War in 1918. He fought to fulfil some of his own reasons, like to go on an adventure and see a new country other than his home,
Australia. He also felt a tad obliged to join the army; it was what ever one was doing. Don’t get me wrong Andy did want to fight for his country but Andy was in love. Her name was Cecelia.

Throughout the book Andy faces difficult times with Cecelia. Firstly leaving her to go to war, then finding out he was a father to a baby from another women, Francis-Jane.

Henry Lyon is an 18 year old who’s life is somehow not fullfiled yet. Henry hasnt experianced real love. At the start of the book, Andy was involved in a girl named Marcelle. Henry didnt know what to do think about the relationship. He was confused, didnt know what to think. The relaionship finally broke off. This was a turning point in henry’s life. He finally did something for himself and he somehow felt relived that he was out of the relationship.

The book shows us how life can be. That life is full of unexpected mishaps. Andy and Henry are two totally different characters and yet they share the same problems such as relationship problems and death.

About me- Andy

Hi my names Andy Lansell,

Some people may describe me as a not so friendly guy, depends what day you catch me on. I have quite a fit physic and I’m one of those typical Aussie blokes I guess. I swear far too much and I love to hang out with my mates. So there’s a little insight into me for you.

I live in Stratford, which is a small country town in Victoria. Stratford is where the love of my life is, Cecelia. Cecelia is the most stunning women I have ever laid my eyes on. She is the love of my life, so it nearly killed me when I had to leave her. I left her to go to war, like most of the men in Stratford.

Deciding to go to war was never an option; it was always that I was going to go. I went for an adventure, to see the world. I like to travel. I like to see the sight of a new country. Somewhere I have never seen before. But I didn’t just join the army to see a new country. I wanted to fight. I wanted to make a difference in the war, to fight for my country.

The last memories at my home town was saying goodbye to everyone at the Strat, having a beer. This was the last day I would see Cecelia for a while. She gave me a diary. It was so I could right all of my thoughts down. The diary has come in handy for me on my travels. I went by train to Spencer Street station, hoping to return to Strafford one day, but not too soon.

Joining the army was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. Training to fight was so fun as well. I always wanted to use a gun and now I finally get too. We were given a rifle to use and then had training drills to teach us how to use them.

Seeing foreign land for the first time was so rewarding. It made me think that this whole war was worth it. The first country that I saw was Colombo, in Ceylon. Fresh fruit and vegetables came on board and then we were off.

England was our next stop. The weather was wet, cold and windy, just how I imagined it.

About Me- Henry

Hi my names Henry Lyon.

I am 18 years old and now I’m ready to get out in the real world and experience what life is really about. I love to travel and go on trips with my mates. I have two good mates, Nick and Marcus who I went to the beach with earlier this year.

I love to sailboard. I wait for the perfect wave to come and when that perfect wave comes, it almost feels like I’m apart of the sea, using and enjoying its beauty. I understand the sea and how the waves work. I feel relaxed when I’m out on my sailboard. The stress of my everyday life gets washed away with the waves and I never want to leave. But I guess that’s how life has to be.

I have just finished high school and now I’m a university student studying law. I want to be a lawyer; well that’s at least what I’m aiming for. I worked hard for where I am now and want to achieve the best that I can do. My parents are probably one of the reasons why I chose to study law. They have high expectations of me because their parents had high expectations of them.

I come from a rich family, in other words my parents are loaded. They top up my credit card when I need them too which is pretty cool. When in the country town, Strafford and my mums Volvo broke down, they payed for all the repairs with no worry at all. So I guess it has its advantages. Sometimes I don’t really won’t people to know that I am rich because they might perceive me as a ‘mummy’s boy’.

I have a girlfriend and her name is Janine. She’s a really nice person and I’m really committed to our relationship. How we met was kind of a miracle, I guess you could say that but on the other hand it was everything but a miracle, let me explain. When I was down at the beach with my friends and my ex-girlfriend, Marcelle, my mum’s car broke down. Graham Trot, Trot as he likes to be called, picked me up and brought me into town so I could get my car fixed. Janine was his girlfriend at the time and this is why it was sort of a miracle. We all got along really well and that’s how we met for the first time.

Later on when I was back home working for my dad, I got a call from Janine saying that Trot had died in a car crash. This is why it was everything but a miracle and this is how I ended up with Janine. The death of Trot was something I had never experienced before. I didn’t know how to feel or react to the news I was given from Janine. My emotions where scattered. I was so sad and surprised at the same time. I never knew that I would never see Trot again once I left the beach. The reality of it all finally hit me. I went back to Stratford where trot lived and attended his funeral. It was one of the hardest days of my life.

I spoke about my ex-girlfriend Marcelle. It was the weirdest break up I had ever been through. I didn’t know how to react to the break up. I thought I would have been sadder than I was, more regretful. But I wasn’t.
